About Rachel's Writing

Grave of the Goddess, a young adult fantasy, is what I am primarily writing these days. As soon as I finish editing the current draft, I'll be submitting it to agents for traditional publishing.

Short Synopsis: Two teenagers from very different backgrounds go looking for the long-dead Moon Goddess who used to be the mate and counter force of a now out of control Sun God. Inspired by the history of Christianity supplanting many European traditions that valued the feminine as much as the masculine.

For the curious, this is a list of all the books I have on my hard-drive in some state of completion.

In order of how long I have been working on them:
  • Face the Flames (Science Fiction/Fantasy)
    • A space opera about three species created by an ancient race. They are now seeking to destroy each other, and only four teenagers with unknown powers can put an end to their warring. Examines social themes of racial equality and valuation of new ideas, and also more existential ideas of order versus chaos and the like.
  • The Circle of Four (Fantasy)
    • Old gods giving way to new gods, and the wisdom (or lack thereof) of trading knowledge for power.
  • The North (High Fantasy)
    •  My biggest and oldest experiment in the realm of high fantasy world-building. I created detailed histories for each of the (many) nations in this book, along with their modern realities. The plot is somewhat of a cynical approach to the typical high fantasy plot.
  • A Hunter's Fire (Mainstream/Historical Fiction)
    • The plot follows the rise and abrupt fall of a fictional rock band from the late 1960s through the late 1970s. It deals mostly with the band's lead vocalist and her struggles with the effects of fame and depression on her creativity.
  • Wings of Destiny (Paranormal Romance)
    • Written as a challenge to display all of the gender stereotypes of the romance genre while inverting the main character's genders. Also a paranormal romance. Therefore, the male main character is a sensitive nurse who is insanely good-looking without being aware of it, and the female main character is a badass gang leader of dragon-hunters. Yeah... It's about Chinese dragons in modern day Washington D.C.
  • Waking Slow (Memoir)
    • An autobiography.
  • Mortal Coils (Urban Fantasy)
    • Part of a series, The Witches of Lamprey Falls. It follows the lives of several clans of witches in a small New England town over three centuries.
  • Breath of Life (New Adult)
    • Twenty something woman living in Boston sees her muse as a real person leading to her having a psychotic break with reality.
  • Chaos Waking (Fantasy)
    • A goddess of chaos is exiled and buried by her brothers and sisters. Centuries later, two grave robbers wake her up.
I also have a few collaborations with my best writing friend that I'd love to see daylight someday:

  • Rising (and possibly a sequel, Descent), a fantasy about a warring pantheon of selfish gods.
  • Seven Words for Madeline, an urban fantasy where magicians, werewolves, and the Washington D.C. political game collide.

  1. Ambitious, to say the least. Good luck with any/all of them!

also Seven Words remains a huge favorite of mine. I still sometimes think about it.
